Hosea 4:11
βProstitution, wine, and new wine take away understanding.β
What does Hosea 4:11 mean?
Hosea is speaking to people who've turned away from God and are chasing after empty things. The prophet uses specific examples, wine and prostitution, to show how certain choices cloud our judgment and pull us away from what matters most. When we pour our energy into things that numb us or make us feel temporarily good, we lose the clarity we need to see what's actually true about ourselves and our relationship with God. The deeper message applies to anything we use to escape or avoid reality. Whether it's literally destructive habits or just the everyday ways we distract ourselves from what we should be paying attention to, our choices have consequences for our ability to think clearly. Hosea invites us to notice where we might be losing our way, and to consider what it would mean to seek understanding and wholeness instead.
