Hosea 13:5
“I knew you in the wilderness, in the land of great drought.”
What does Hosea 13:5 mean?
God is reminding Israel of their earliest days as a nation, when he sustained them during their wilderness wanderings after leaving Egypt. In that harsh, unforgiving landscape with no natural resources, God alone provided water, food, and protection, making his care deeply personal and undeniable. He's saying, "I was there for you when you had nothing else to turn to, when you were completely dependent on me." The painful irony in Hosea is that despite this intimate history of faithfulness, Israel has now turned away to worship other gods, forgetting the One who knew them in their most vulnerable hour.
