Hosea 12:7
“A merchant has dishonest scales in his hand. He loves to defraud.”
What does Hosea 12:7 mean?
Hosea is calling out people who use their power and position to cheat others, particularly the vulnerable. The "dishonest scales" represent any way we might take unfair advantage, whether through business dealings, broken promises, or hidden manipulation. The blunt statement "he loves to defraud" suggests this isn't accidental wrongdoing, but a chosen pattern, something the person has gotten comfortable with. In Hosea's time, merchants literally used rigged scales to shortchange customers, but the principle reaches far beyond commerce. It speaks to how easily we can rationalize taking more than we deserve or giving less than we promised when we think we can get away with it. The verse invites us to notice where dishonesty might have become so familiar that we've stopped recognizing it as wrong.
