Hosea 12:11
“If Gilead is wicked, surely they are worthless. In Gilgal they sacrifice bulls. Indeed, their altars are like heaps in the furrows of the field.”
What does Hosea 12:11 mean?
Hosea is pointing out that the northern kingdom of Israel has turned away from genuine faith, despite all their religious rituals. Gilead and Gilgal were regions known for their shrines and sacrifices, yet the prophet suggests their outward religious acts mean nothing because their hearts aren't aligned with God. The image of altars scattered like random heaps in a plowed field emphasizes how meaningless these sacrifices have become, scattered and purposeless rather than centered on authentic devotion. This speaks to something many of us recognize: we can go through the motions of faith, attend services, or perform good deeds while missing the deeper relationship God actually desires from us.
