What does Hosea 11:12 mean?

These words capture God's pain at being surrounded by people He loves who won't be honest with Him. Ephraim and Judah are the northern and southern kingdoms of Israel, and God is describing how their deception cuts deeper than outright rebellion because it's dressed up in false words and broken promises. Even as God has shown them faithfulness, they keep turning away to other gods and other ways, pretending everything is fine while their hearts have drifted far. The prophet Hosea speaks this to show that God notices not just our actions but our lack of honesty with Him, and He grieves when people He cares for build walls of falsehood between themselves and Him.
