What does Hosea 1:3 mean?

Hosea marries Gomer and has a son with her, beginning what will become a painful but profound story about unfaithfulness and love. The prophet is being called to live out a difficult lesson: his wife will betray him, just as Israel has betrayed God. This wasn't a marriage born from romance alone, but from obedience to God's instruction to marry someone who would act unfaithfully, making Hosea's personal heartbreak a living message to his people. It's the kind of sacrifice God sometimes asks, turning private pain into public testimony about what it feels like to love someone who doesn't return that love faithfully.
