Hebrews 9:23
“It was necessary therefore that the copies of the things in the heavens should be cleansed with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.”
What does Hebrews 9:23 mean?
The author of Hebrews is explaining why Jesus's sacrifice matters so much more than the old temple system. Under the old covenant, priests repeatedly purified the earthly temple and its furnishings with animal blood, following patterns they believed reflected heavenly reality. But since those earthly rituals could only address surface-level separation from God, the true heavenly reconciliation required something infinitely better: Jesus's single, perfect sacrifice of himself. This is meant to reassure you that if you're carrying guilt or wondering whether you're truly forgiven, the old system of repeated sacrifices couldn't actually settle anything permanently.
