“For the law appoints men as high priests who have weakness, but the word of the oath which came after the law appoints a Son forever who has been perfected.”
What does Hebrews 7:28 mean?
The writer of Hebrews is contrasting two kinds of priesthood. The old system, based on Jewish law, kept appointing new high priests one after another, and all of them were flawed human beings who struggled with their own limitations. Jesus, by contrast, was appointed through God's sworn oath as a priest who is perfect and permanent, needing no replacement. This matters because it means our access to God doesn't depend on a human priest's goodness or availability, and it doesn't have to be renewed every generation. When you bring your struggles, questions, or needs to God, you're approaching through someone whose character is completely trustworthy and eternally secure in that role. The weakness that keeps cropping up in human leaders and institutions finds its answer in someone who doesn't carry that same burden.
