What does Hebrews 7:14 mean?
The writer of Hebrews is pointing out something that would have seemed odd to Jewish readers: Jesus came from the tribe of Judah, yet the Old Testament law said only priests from the tribe of Levi could serve in the temple. This wasn't a disqualification in the author's eyes, though, but rather evidence that Jesus belongs to a completely different kind of priesthood. By referencing an ancient priest named Melchizedek (who appears briefly in Genesis), Hebrews argues that Jesus operates under a higher, older order of priesthood that bypasses the Levitical system altogether. It's a way of saying that Jesus' authority doesn't come from following the old religious rules, but from something deeper and more permanent.
