Hebrews 5:6
“As he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.””
What does Hebrews 5:6 mean?
This verse quotes an ancient psalm to describe Jesus as a priest in a completely different way than the Jewish temple system worked. Melchizedek was a mysterious figure from Abraham's time who was both a king and a priest, and his priesthood never needed to be passed down or renewed because it simply continued. By calling Jesus a priest "after the order of Melchizedek," the writer is saying Jesus holds an eternal, unchanging priesthood that doesn't depend on human succession or ritual renewal. It's a way of explaining that Jesus is the ultimate mediator between God and people, and unlike the old priesthood that required constant replacement, his work stands forever.
