“For although by this time you should be teachers, you again need to have someone teach you the rudiments of the first principles of the revelations of God. You have come to need milk, and not solid food.”
What does Hebrews 5:12 mean?
The writer of Hebrews is gently calling out believers who aren't growing spiritually despite having had plenty of time to do so. Using the image of an infant needing milk versus a mature person eating solid food, he's saying that these Christians should have progressed beyond basic foundational beliefs by now, yet they're stuck at the beginning, unable to help others or deepen their own understanding. The "rudiments" and "first principles" refer to elementary truths about God that beginners need, not the richer, more challenging teachings that mature faith requires. It's a compassionate but honest wake-up call: spiritual growth isn't automatic, and staying at the starting point for years is a sign that something needs to change in how we're approaching our relationship with God.
