“Let us fear therefore, lest perhaps anyone of you should seem to have come short of a promise of entering into his rest.”
What does Hebrews 4:1 mean?
The writer is urging the early Christians not to become complacent about their relationship with God, using "fear" in the sense of taking something seriously rather than being terrified. He's saying that God has made a genuine promise of entering into his rest (a place of peace and completeness), but that promise isn't automatic—we can miss it if we drift away or stop believing. This comes after the author discusses how the Israelites in the wilderness failed to enter God's rest because of unbelief, and he's warning his readers not to make the same mistake by ignoring what they've been taught.
