Hebrews 13:9

Don’t be carried away by various and strange teachings, for it is good that the heart be established by grace, not by food, through which those who were so occupied were not benefited.

What does Hebrews 13:9 mean?

The writer is warning against getting pulled into unnecessary rules about what you can and can't eat, something that was creating real division in early Christian communities. Some people had become obsessed with dietary laws, thinking that following strict food rules would bring them closer to God or make them more righteous. The real point, the author reminds us, is that our hearts are made stable and whole through God's grace, not through dietary discipline or any other external practice. When we focus on rule-keeping instead of God's acceptance of us, we miss the freedom and wholeness that grace actually offers, and we end up spiritually empty no matter how strict we've been.
