Hebrews 13:5
“Be free from the love of money, content with such things as you have, for he has said, “I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you.””
What does Hebrews 13:5 mean?
The writer of Hebrews is offering us a pathway through financial anxiety: stop chasing money as though it's your security, and instead trust that God's presence is what you actually need. When we're content with what we have, we're freed from the exhausting cycle of always wanting more, always worrying we don't have enough. The promise quoted here (from Deuteronomy 31:6) is God's word to Joshua as he faced an impossible task, but the author applies it to us in our everyday struggles. The point is straightforward: you have God's commitment that he won't abandon you, so you can stop white-knuckling your finances or possessions as though they're your only guarantee of safety. That doesn't mean financial wisdom doesn't matter, but it means your deepest security doesn't rest on your bank account or what you own.
