What does Hebrews 13:12 mean?
Jesus chose to die outside Jerusalem's walls, in a place of shame and rejection, so that through his sacrifice he could make us holy and set apart for God. The writer of Hebrews is drawing a connection to Old Testament temple practices where sacrificial animals were taken outside the camp to be offered, suggesting that Jesus became the ultimate sacrifice that accomplishes what those rituals only pointed toward. When we trust in what Jesus did, we're not just forgiven for our mistakes, but we're actually transformed and made clean before God in a way that sticks. His willingness to be cast out, to accept that suffering and humiliation, is what makes all of this possible for us.
