What does Hebrews 11:35 mean?
This passage honors two kinds of faith in the face of death. Some faithful people saw their loved ones brought back to life through God's power, which gave them hope and vindication. But others chose a harder path: they were tortured and refused to escape, because they believed in a resurrection that awaited them beyond this life, and they didn't want to compromise their faith to save themselves in the moment. The writer is acknowledging that faithfulness sometimes looks different depending on our circumstances. Some experience dramatic rescue and restoration here and now. Others experience suffering that seems to have no immediate payoff. Either way, the underlying trust is the same: that God's promises extend beyond what we can see, and that staying faithful to him matters more than protecting ourselves through any means available. It's a tender recognition that both the person who gets their miracle and the person who doesn't can still be walking in genuine faith.
