What does Hebrews 10:28 mean?
Under the Old Testament system, breaking the covenant law was treated as a serious matter that required multiple witnesses before judgment could be carried out, yet still resulted in death without mercy. The author of Hebrews is reminding us of how strictly God's people were held accountable to that first covenant, drawing a contrast with what comes next in the passage about how much more serious it should be to reject the new covenant through Christ. The point isn't that we should fear execution today, but rather that if the old system demanded such gravity and consequences, how much more weight should we give to turning away from God's ultimate offer of grace? It's meant to jar us into realizing that rejecting what Christ offers isn't a light matter, even though we live under grace rather than law.
