What does Hebrews 10:2 mean?
The writer is making a logical argument about why the old system of animal sacrifices had to keep repeating year after year. If those sacrifices actually worked to completely remove guilt and shame from people's hearts, they wouldn't need to keep doing them over and over. The fact that priests were constantly offering the same sacrifices suggests the system itself couldn't fully heal what was broken in people's relationship with God. This is part of a larger argument in Hebrews about why Jesus's sacrifice was different and final. The author is saying that true forgiveness means the weight of sin is genuinely lifted from your conscience, not just covered up temporarily. When you're truly cleansed, you stop carrying that burden of guilt around. If the old way actually accomplished that, people would have stopped sacrificing long ago.
