What does Hebrews 1:3 mean?
The author of Hebrews is describing Jesus in the most exalted terms, saying he reflects God's glory the way sunlight reflects from the sun, and that he is the exact representation of who God is. This means when we want to know what God is truly like, we're looking at Jesus. The verse also emphasizes that Jesus isn't passive or distant, but actively holding everything together by his powerful word, which speaks to the idea that the universe depends on his sustaining power. Finally, it grounds Jesus's current position: after accomplishing our forgiveness through his sacrifice, he took his seat at God's right hand, a place of honor and authority. For many people, this verse offers comfort that the one who knows us completely and loves us enough to die for us is now in the position of highest power and care.
