What does Haggai 1:14 mean?
After the Jewish people returned from exile in Babylon, the temple in Jerusalem lay in ruins and neglected. God stirred the hearts of both the political leader (Zerubbabel) and the spiritual leader (Joshua) to move forward with rebuilding, and this divine motivation spread through the entire community. When God "stirred up the spirit," he awakened their courage, conviction, and willingness to do hard work even when resources were scarce and the task seemed overwhelming. The beautiful part here is that God didn't just inspire one leader, but touched everyone, uniting the whole remnant of people around a shared purpose, and they actually got to work.
