Genesis 9:6
“Whoever sheds man’s blood, his blood will be shed by man, for God made man in his own image.”
What does Genesis 9:6 mean?
This verse comes right after the flood, when God is establishing basic laws for Noah and his descendants as they rebuild. God is saying that human life has sacred value because we're made in God's image, and therefore taking a human life demands the most serious consequence. The principle here isn't primarily about revenge, but about proportional justice and the dignity of human life. When someone commits murder, they've violated something fundamental about how God values people, so the community's response must reflect how seriously God takes that violation. Many read this as a foundation for why capital punishment exists in human law, though people interpret its application differently across time and culture. What makes this comforting for many is the underlying message: your life matters to God in a deep way because you bear his image. That's true whether you're powerful or vulnerable, remembered or forgotten.
