Genesis 7:2
“You shall take seven pairs of every clean animal with you, the male and his female. Of the animals that are not clean, take two, the male and his female.”
What does Genesis 7:2 mean?
God is giving Noah detailed instructions about which animals to bring onto the ark, and the numbers matter for what comes next. Clean animals (those considered acceptable for sacrifice and food in ancient Israel) get seven pairs each, while unclean animals get only two pairs. This difference reflects God's plan: the larger numbers of clean animals would ensure enough remained after the flood for both repopulating the earth and sustaining Noah's family through sacrifice and food. In the ancient world, this would have made practical sense to Noah's original audience, showing that God wasn't being random or harsh, but thoughtful about survival and worship after the catastrophe.
