What does Genesis 7:12 mean?

During the flood God sent to cleanse the earth, rain fell continuously for forty days and forty nights, which would have been an absolutely overwhelming and terrifying experience for Noah's family sheltering in the ark. The number forty appears throughout Scripture as a period of testing or transformation, and here it marks the complete inundation of the old world. In that endless downpour, with water rising higher than the tallest mountains, Noah had to hold fast to God's promise that he and his family would be preserved. For anyone facing overwhelming circumstances now, this passage reminds us that even when conditions seem impossible and endless, God keeps His word to those who trust Him.
