What does Genesis 50:10 mean?
When Jacob died in Egypt, his son Joseph wanted to honor him by burying him in the family's homeland of Canaan. This verse captures the funeral procession stopping at a threshing floor (a common gathering place) to pause and grieve together. The "very great and severe lamentation" shows how deeply Joseph and his family felt this loss, and the seven-day mourning period was a customary practice that gave them time to process their grief together as a community. What's touching here is that even in a foreign land, far from home, Joseph ensured his father received proper respect and that the family had space to mourn openly and fully. Sometimes our hardest losses happen when we're already feeling displaced or alone, but this reminds us that grief itself is a way of honoring what someone meant to us, and that sharing it with others makes it bearable.
