What does Genesis 5:31 mean?
Lamech lived an extraordinarily long life by modern standards, yet even 777 years couldn't protect him from death. This verse comes near the end of Genesis's genealogy, a long list of people who lived before the flood, and it shows a pattern repeated throughout: no matter how long someone lived in those early days, mortality was inevitable. What makes this particular verse worth pausing over is that Lamech is actually the grandfather of Noah, the man who would survive the great flood. So while Lamech's story ends with death like everyone else's, his lineage didn't.
