““Benjamin is a ravenous wolf. In the morning he will devour the prey. At evening he will divide the plunder.””
What does Genesis 49:27 mean?
Jacob's final blessing for his youngest son Benjamin is fierce and warlike. The image of a wolf devouring prey and dividing spoils paints a picture of a warrior tribe, strong and aggressive in battle, whether attacking at dawn or claiming victory by nightfall. This wasn't meant as an insult but rather as a recognition of Benjamin's descendants' fighting spirit and tribal character. Later in Israel's history, the tribe of Benjamin did become known as skilled warriors and fighters, so Jacob's words captured something true about who they would become.
