What does Genesis 49:22 mean?
Jacob is blessing his son Joseph here, using the image of a thriving grapevine to describe how Joseph's life and family will flourish and expand. A vine growing by a spring has constant water and will naturally spread its branches in all directions, eventually going beyond any boundaries that might contain it. This captures what Jacob saw in Joseph: someone whose gifts, influence, and descendants would grow abundantly and spread far beyond what might have seemed possible, especially given Joseph's suffering and exile in Egypt. It's a beautiful way of saying that Joseph's legacy wouldn't be limited or constrained, but would overflow into blessing.
