What does Genesis 49:16 mean?

Jacob is blessing his twelve sons near the end of his life, speaking over each one's future. When he comes to Dan, he uses wordplay on the name itself, which means "he judges" or "he will judge." This isn't predicting that Dan will become a courtroom judge, but rather that this tribe will be known for its strength and ability to stand up for itself and seek justice. There's something both hopeful and slightly ominous in this blessing. Dan is described elsewhere in Scripture as a warrior tribe, and Jacob seems to be affirming their capacity to protect their own interests and fight for what's right. It's a reminder that being part of God's people doesn't mean being passive or weak, but rather having the courage to pursue justice within the community.
