Genesis 48:20
“He blessed them that day, saying, “In you will Israel bless, saying, ‘God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh’” He set Ephraim before Manasseh.”
What does Genesis 48:20 mean?
Jacob is blessing the two sons of Joseph, and he deliberately reverses their birth order by placing Ephraim (the younger) before Manasseh (the older). This might seem odd, but it shows that God's blessings don't always follow what we'd expect or what seems fair by human standards. Jacob is essentially saying that these boys will become such a blessing that future generations of Israelites will invoke their names when blessing their own children, which is one of the highest honors imaginable. The phrase about God making people "as Ephraim and as Manasseh" became a traditional Jewish blessing that parents still use today when blessing their sons. What's tender here is that Jacob is affirming Joseph's children, showing them they matter deeply, and trusting that God's purposes will flow through them in surprising ways.
