“Now don’t be grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life.”
What does Genesis 45:5 mean?
Joseph has just revealed himself to his brothers, who sold him into slavery years earlier. Rather than demand revenge, he's telling them to stop blaming themselves, because he's come to see his suffering as part of God's larger plan to keep his family alive during a terrible famine. He's offering them forgiveness and a perspective that transforms their guilt into something meaningful. This doesn't mean their sin didn't matter or that Joseph felt no pain. It means that even through their cruelty, God was working toward preservation and rescue. For anyone carrying shame about their past or worried about how they've hurt others, Joseph's words suggest that God's redemptive purpose can weave through our worst moments, and that extending (and receiving) forgiveness is sometimes how we discover that.
