What does Genesis 45:26 mean?
When Jacob's sons finally told him the truth about Joseph—that their brother was alive and had become the most powerful man in Egypt—Jacob's heart literally stopped. He couldn't process it. For years he had believed Joseph was dead, killed by a wild animal, and he'd carried that grief as a permanent wound. When confronted with news that contradicted his deepest, most settled belief about his loss, his mind and body simply rejected it. There's something deeply human in Jacob's disbelief. Grief has a way of settling into our bones as certainty, and when something threatens to overturn that certainty, we resist it, even when we desperately want it to be true. Jacob wasn't being stubborn or faithless in that moment—he was being human, unable to bridge the gap between years of mourning and the sudden possibility of joy. It takes time for hope to feel real again.
