What does Genesis 44:5 mean?
Joseph's steward is accusing Benjamin of stealing a silver cup, which he claims Joseph uses both for drinking and for divination (a practice of reading omens or seeking guidance through objects). This moment is part of Joseph's elaborate test of his brothers, who sold him into slavery years before, to see if they've changed and whether they truly care about their youngest brother Benjamin. The accusation is actually false—Joseph planted the cup in Benjamin's sack as a setup—but it creates a crisis that forces the brothers to reveal their character. When they could abandon Benjamin to save themselves, they instead offer to become slaves in his place, showing genuine transformation. For us, this reminds us that what looks like disaster or betrayal can sometimes be God working beneath the surface to test, refine, and ultimately restore broken relationships.
