What does Genesis 44:26 mean?
Judah and his brothers are explaining to their Egyptian official (who is actually Joseph, though they don't recognize him) why they initially refused to bring their youngest brother Benjamin to Egypt. Their father Jacob had already lost Joseph years ago, and he's desperately protective of Benjamin, the only remaining son of his beloved wife Rachel. The brothers are caught in a painful bind: they need to return to Egypt for grain during a famine, but the official has demanded they prove their honesty by bringing Benjamin as proof they're not spies. What makes this moment so raw is that the brothers are torn between their father's anguish and their own survival.
