Genesis 44:17
“He said, “Far be it from me that I should do so. The man in whose hand the cup is found, he will be my slave; but as for you, go up in peace to your father.””
What does Genesis 44:17 mean?
Judah has just pleaded desperately with Egypt's ruler (Joseph, though Judah doesn't know it) to release his youngest brother Benjamin, offering himself as a slave instead. Joseph's response here shows him testing whether his brothers have truly changed since they sold him into slavery years before. By keeping only the one in whose possession the cup was planted and releasing the others, Joseph is creating a moment where Judah must choose: save himself and return home, or stand by his brother in trouble. This is the turning point where Judah proves he's no longer the man who once betrayed family for profit, choosing instead to advocate for Benjamin's freedom even at great personal cost. The offer of "peace" to go back to their father is both genuine freedom and a final test of their character.
