Genesis 44:15
“Joseph said to them, “What deed is this that you have done? Don’t you know that such a man as I can indeed divine?””
What does Genesis 44:15 mean?
Joseph has just discovered that his youngest brother Benjamin has been framed with the stolen cup, and he's confronting his brothers about it. When he says he can "divine," he means he has the power to uncover hidden things—whether through magical means (which was common in Egypt at that time) or through his position as a powerful official. He's not necessarily claiming to actually practice divination, but rather using their cultural understanding to make his point: "Don't you realize who you're dealing with? I have the resources and authority to know what's really going on here." This moment is crucial because Joseph is testing his brothers one more time before revealing himself. He wants to see if they'll abandon Benjamin as they once abandoned him, or if they've genuinely changed. By framing his question this way, Joseph is giving them the chance to show their true character under pressure.
