What does Genesis 44:13 mean?

When Joseph's brothers discover the silver cup planted in Benjamin's sack, they're devastated, knowing this looks like theft and could mean losing their youngest brother. Tearing their clothes was how people in that culture expressed extreme grief and shame, so this physical act shows how genuinely distressed they are. They quickly load up and head back to face Joseph, not running away or abandoning Benjamin despite the danger, which reveals something important about how they've changed since they sold Joseph into slavery years earlier. Their willingness to return and face consequences together suggests they've grown in loyalty to their family.
