What does Genesis 43:32 mean?
During Joseph's time as an Egyptian official, the cultural divide between Egyptians and Hebrews was so strong that eating together was considered ritually unclean, even taboo. So when Joseph's brothers came to Egypt during a famine, Joseph could not sit with them at the same table without offending his Egyptian hosts and colleagues, even though he was Hebrew himself. This separation reveals how deeply embedded prejudice was in that ancient society, making Joseph's position as a foreigner in power even more isolating.
