What does Genesis 43:26 mean?
Joseph's brothers have traveled to Egypt to buy food during the famine, and they're meeting him face-to-face again after years of separation (though they don't yet know who he really is). When Joseph enters his home, they present the gift they've brought and prostrate themselves before him, showing both respect and submission to this powerful Egyptian official. This moment echoes something Joseph had dreamed about decades earlier, before his brothers sold him into slavery. In those youthful dreams, his family bowed down to him, and he'd been mocked for even mentioning it. Now, standing in a foreign land as a ruler, he watches those dreams come to pass. For Joseph, it must stir complicated feelings. For us reading it, the scene captures how life's painful chapters sometimes lead to unexpected reversals, and how humility (his brothers bowing) sometimes becomes necessary before healing can begin.
