What does Genesis 43:24 mean?
When travelers arrived in the ancient Near East after a long journey, washing feet was one of the first courtesies offered, since roads were dusty and sandals offered little protection. Here, Joseph's household steward is extending this basic hospitality to Joseph's brothers, though they don't yet know who he really is. The attention to their comfort—water for washing, food for their animals—shows care and respect, which makes what happens next in their story even more poignant. Sometimes the smallest acts of kindness, like making sure someone is comfortable and cared for, open the door to healing and reconciliation.
