Genesis 43:18
“The men were afraid, because they were brought to Joseph’s house; and they said, “Because of the money that was returned in our sacks the first time, we’re brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, attack us, and seize us as slaves, along with our donkeys.””
What does Genesis 43:18 mean?
Jacob's sons are terrified as they're led into Joseph's home, convinced that the returned money from their previous grain purchase is a trap. They fear Joseph (the Egyptian official they don't recognize as their brother) will use this as leverage to enslave them and take their animals. This moment captures the weight of guilt they still carry for selling Joseph into slavery years earlier, combined with the very real dangers of being foreigners in Egypt with limited power. Their anxiety shows how a guilty conscience can distort our perception of others' intentions, making us assume the worst even when we're simply being invited to a meal.
