What does Genesis 42:34 mean?

Joseph, now a powerful official in Egypt, is testing his brothers who sold him into slavery years earlier. He's holding Simeon hostage and demanding they bring Benjamin, their youngest brother, as proof they're telling the truth about their family. The condition feels harsh, but Joseph is using it as a way to see if his brothers have changed, and whether their father Jacob will actually let Benjamin go (something that would have been especially painful for Jacob, who lost Joseph long ago). What Joseph offers in return is genuine: he promises to free Simeon and allow them full access to trade in Egypt, which means survival during the famine. The brothers face an impossible choice between their imprisoned brother, their aging father's grief, and their family's hunger. Sometimes trust has to be earned through difficult circumstances, and sometimes what feels like a test is actually an invitation to prove that real change has happened in our hearts.
