What does Genesis 42:22 mean?
Reuben is speaking to his brothers years after they sold their youngest brother Joseph into slavery. When a famine forces them to seek help in Egypt (not knowing Joseph is now in power there), their consciences catch up with them, and Reuben reminds them that he tried to stop them from harming Joseph in the first place. He's saying, "I warned you not to do this terrible thing, and you ignored me—now we're facing the consequences of what we did." This moment shows how guilt doesn't simply disappear with time. The brothers carried the weight of their cruelty for years, and when hardship came, they understood it as God's way of calling them to account. Reuben's words carry both "I told you so" and genuine grief, reflecting how painful it can be to watch others suffer the results of their own wrongdoing, especially when you tried to prevent it.
