What does Genesis 41:18 mean?

Joseph is interpreting Pharaoh's dream here, describing the first part of a vision that foretold Egypt's future. In the dream, seven healthy, well-fed cows emerged from the Nile River and grazed in the marshland, a sign of abundance and prosperity. The river was the lifeblood of Egypt, so cattle coming from it symbolized blessing and fertility flowing into the land. What makes this detail matter is that these same seven cows were later consumed by seven starving cows in the dream, representing how Egypt would soon face a severe famine after years of plenty. Joseph's careful explanation of these images would prove crucial in helping Pharaoh prepare the nation for the coming crisis.
