What does Genesis 4:6 mean?

God speaks to Cain with genuine concern after Cain has become upset about his offering not being accepted. Rather than leaving Cain alone in his disappointment, God approaches him directly and asks questions that invite reflection, as if to say, "I see what's happening in your heart, and I want to understand it with you." This moment shows that God notices our emotional struggles and doesn't shame us for feeling them. At the same time, God's questions suggest that Cain has a choice about what to do with these feelings, and that it matters which direction he turns.
