What does Genesis 38:3 mean?

Judah had married a woman named Shuah, and this verse marks the birth of their first son. The simple act of naming him "Er" might seem unremarkable on the surface, but in Genesis this son becomes deeply important to the larger story, since Er's life and death set in motion one of the Bible's most unusual and poignant stories of family obligation and justice. For now, we're just meeting him at his beginning, a moment of hope and new life in what will become a complicated family narrative. Sometimes the Bible introduces characters this way, quietly, before their significance unfolds.
