What does Genesis 38:29 mean?
In this unusual birth story, twin boys are being born to Tamar, and there's a competition happening even in the womb. The firstborn son's hand emerges first, so the midwife ties a scarlet thread on his wrist to mark him as the firstborn (who would receive the family inheritance and honor). But then he pulls his hand back, and his twin brother comes out instead, making the second twin technically the firstborn. Tamar's exclamation, "Why have you made a breach for yourself?" is both practical and pointed, marking the moment when the natural birth order got turned upside down. The name Perez, given to the son who came out first, literally means "breach" or "breaking through." This moment matters far beyond the drama of the delivery room: Perez becomes the ancestor of King David and, eventually, of Jesus. It's a reminder woven throughout Scripture that God's plans don't always follow human expectations or the rules we think should apply. Sometimes the person who seems to come second ends up being first in God's purposes, and sometimes a disruption or unexpected turn becomes part of something sacred and redemptive.
