What does Genesis 38:23 mean?
Judah is backing away from a difficult situation, deciding it's better to lose his pledge than to pursue it further. He's sent a goat as payment (earlier in the story, he'd left personal items as collateral with a woman he didn't recognize), and now he's abandoning the effort to retrieve them, hoping the matter will simply disappear. This moment reveals how shame and pride can push us toward avoidance rather than accountability. Judah would rather accept the loss than risk public humiliation by continuing to search for the woman. Yet ironically, this same chapter shows how his attempt to hide from the truth eventually unravels, and he ends up facing what he tried to avoid. Sometimes our quickest escape routes lead us exactly where we don't want to go.
