Genesis 38:15
“When Judah saw her, he thought that she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face.”
What does Genesis 38:15 mean?
Judah has just lost his wife and is traveling alone when he encounters a veiled woman by the roadside. He assumes she's a sex worker because her face is covered, which was apparently how such women presented themselves in that time and place. The covered face was a deliberate signal that made her appear available to strangers. This moment sets up one of Scripture's most unexpected stories, where Judah himself becomes entangled in a situation that will expose his own moral failures. Sometimes what we see on the surface—a quick judgment based on appearance—misses the fuller, often uncomfortable truth beneath.
