What does Genesis 37:3 mean?
Jacob (called Israel here) had Joseph as a child in his later years, which made the boy especially precious to him, so he lavished attention and gifts on him. That coat of many colors was probably a visible symbol of Joseph's favored status, a beautiful garment that would have made him stand out among his siblings. While Jacob's love for Joseph was genuine, showing such obvious preference created deep resentment among his older brothers, who saw themselves as less valued. This favoritism becomes the fuel for the jealousy and betrayal that follows in Joseph's story, reminding us how our choices about whom we favor can wound those we love, even when our affection itself comes from a tender place.
