What does Genesis 37:29 mean?
When Reuben comes back to the cistern where his brothers had thrown Joseph, he discovers the boy is gone. His immediate reaction, tearing his clothes, was how people in that culture expressed shock, grief, or deep distress. Reuben had actually tried to save Joseph from his brothers' murderous anger, planning to rescue him later, so this discovery devastates him.
